NFL Week 5 overreactions: Cowboys’ Dak Prescott’s brutal injury stuns sports world
SportsPulse: The sports world watched in shock as Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott was carted off the field with a brutal ankle injury. Mackenzie Salmon reacts to that and all the biggest storylines from Week 5 in the NFL.
The New England Patriots are set to practice for the first time this week on Thursday and it looks as if the team will have its starting quarterback back in the fold.
The Patriots on Wednesday activated Cam Newton off the NFL’s COVID-19/Reserve list. Newton is expected to participate in Thursday’s practice, which puts him on track to start the Patriots’ rescheduled game Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
The news isn’t a surprise. Under the NFL’s COVID-19 guidelines, Newton was required to be out for at least 10 days after testing positive for the illness. He found out about his test results on Oct. 2.
That led to the Patriots-Kansas City Chiefs game being delayed one day. When the Patriots did take on the Chiefs, they did so without Newton. Brian Hoyer started the game but was eventually pulled and replaced by Jarrett Stidham in the 26-10 loss.
Had the Patriots-Denver game not been postponed, the team is likely to have competed without Newton. In this case, the postponement helped the Patriots. Of course, the events of last week weren’t positive as the team placed three players — Stephon Gilmore, Bill Murray and Byron Cowart — on the COVID-19/Reserve list.
It also looks like the Broncos will get back starting quarterback Drew Lock, who suffered a shoulder injury in Week 2 and also would have missed the Patriots-Broncos game had it been played as scheduled.
With Newton, the Patriots are 2-1. The quarterback has 714 passing yards to go with two passing touchdowns and two interceptions this season. He also has rushed for 124 yards and four touchdowns.
