Point out failures in actions to protect women

In a country with more than 3,170 women victims of murder and femicide so far this year, together with another 98,000 who have suffered some type of violence, it shows that actions and strategies to protect women have failed throughout the entire nation, experts warn.

Mexico reaches this November 25, “International Day for the Eradication of Violence against Women”, with discouraging figures that document the reality that women live in the country, because according to figures from the Executive Secretariat of the National Security System Public, between January and October of this year, the homicide of more than 2,378 women has been registered, as well as 792 victims of femicide and more than 56,671 cases of women who have reported injuries that put their lives at risk.

In addition to the fact that, between January and September of this year, crimes such as family violence showed an upward trend, with increases of up to 7%, in relation to the same period of the previous year. It should be noted that, while in the first 9 months of 2021, close to 192,752 women had reported family violence, by 2022, the cases increased to more than 206,915.

Likewise, gender violence went from 3,117 complaints in 2021 to 4,083, for 2022, that is, an increase of 31%, as did rapes, which went from 15,771 cases in 2021, to 17,743 in 2022; an increase of 12.5 percent.

Obstacles persist

Impunity and all the obstacles that women survivors and victims of femicide face in accessing justice persist in the country, lamented Carolina Ramírez Suárez, coordinator of the Survivors of Femicide in Mexico collective and the national group of Spotlight initiative reference.

For Ramírez Suárez, one of the main problems in addressing the violence that women experience every day occurs from different fronts, because despite having laws on the matter, the victims still do not have access to justice, which adds the increase in femicide violence and the lack of resources to deal with this violence.

While he stressed that access to justice continues to be blocked, since there is an urgent need to have lawyers and lawyers, and above all, public ministries with a gender perspective. In addition to the fact that judges continue to judge without a gender perspective, without understanding the crime of femicide and gender reasons, as well as analyzing that the attempted femicide is part of the crime of femicide and is not family violence.

For her part, Lydia Cordero, director of the organization Casa Amiga Esther Chávez Cano of Chihuahua, said that for years there has been resistance on the part of the government to recognize the reality that exists in Mexico regarding the issue of women, even through discrediting actions or repeated violence against women who raised their voices.

The activist with more than 20 years of experience, lamented that, although the laws exist, and there are government speeches that talk about gender equality or incorporating public policies in favor of women, many of these policies are a simulation, and They have been used for political purposes, since the issue has become mandatory and preponderant in the country given the alarming figures of violence.
