A rival operator to Eurostar is planning to introduce London-Paris trains by 2025, with the potential for direct trains from the UK to Germany and Switzerland in the future. Spanish company Evolyn will purchase 12 trains from French manufacturer Alstom for its high-speed rail service under the English Channel. The £1 billion investment aims to challenge Eurostar’s monopoly on the route, which it has held since 1994. Evolyn intends to begin London-Paris trains by 2025 and expand to other destinations by 2026, potentially including Frankfurt, Cologne, Zurich, and Geneva. Eurotunnel’s parent company, Getlink, has welcomed Evolyn’s entry into the market and expects new routes to be established. The Channel Tunnel infrastructure has the capacity for significant growth in high-speed passenger traffic. Eurostar currently operates trains to Paris, Lille, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. The proposed competitor has not yet disclosed the identities of its investors.
