“I greet you from Mexico City, and not, as the detractors of democracy claim, from another country. It is here where the councilors of the INE We decided to be there to follow up on the many peaceful demonstrations that took place in more than 50 cities in Mexico and in other parts of the world, and in which hundreds of thousands of people spoke out in defense of our democracy and our electoral system. in the face of the risks of anti-democratic regression that the country is experiencing,” he said.

He said that the 11 councilors of the INE They decided not to attend the marches, “to prevent our presence from being used to disqualify the free will of the citizenry that was heard today in the streets to protect our democratic conquests.”
Lorenzo Córdova stated that the democracy that Mexico has today is a collective achievement and a patrimony of the citizenry, and that it is recognized worldwide.
Mexican democracy was not built in a single day nor is it the work of a single man, a single party or a single political force, it is the product of many civic political struggles against a hegemonic party regime, a struggle against electoral fraud that characterized that pre-democratic past. Struggles led by characters who have become symbols of our transition to democracy that were accompanied by millions of citizens, ”he said.
The President of the Institute reiterated that the autonomy of the INE as well as democracy, “if we do not want to return to an authoritarian past that we fortunately leave behind.”
Córdova asked to attend the call made today by the former president of the then Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), José Woldenberg, so that public offices continue to be defined by truly free and democratic elections.
“That’s why in the INE We see with satisfaction that citizens value and defend that democracy that with so much sacrifice was gradually and collectively built in recent decades. Thank you,” she asserted.
