Portugal has so far recorded 668,951 confirmed cases and 11,305 deaths from the disease. On Wednesday, it recorded a record number of 293 disease deaths in a single day.
Costa told TVI that the situation is not “bad” but rather “terrible,” adding that “there is no point in underestimating that we are not facing the worst stage … and that worst stage will remain for a few more weeks, that is for sure.”
Costa pointed out that the conditions in his country had deteriorated, for reasons including the government’s easing of restrictions imposed to combat the pandemic between Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, and also the outbreak of a new highly contagious virus that was detected for the first time in Britain.
Germany said on Wednesday it would send military medical experts to Portugal to see what kind of support it could provide, but Costa warned that Germany and other European partners could not do much in this situation.
