“Progress Shark” is just one of 45 vivid artworks aimed at turning Sydney into a “rainbow metropolis” to celebrate equally 45 years of the Sydney Homosexual and Lesbian Mardi Gras and WorldPride, which are managing concurrently.
Artist George Buchanan sewed the shark-sized leotard in her garage. It was intended to welcome guests to the Australian Museum but it has somehow emerged as WorldPride’s unofficial image.
Buchanan advised BBC News that it took “six or 7” hrs to get the outfit on to the shark, which is suspended 16 ft above the ground outside the museum.
She explained to The Guardian: “It’s quite Aussie humour. It is really so silly. It truly is just absurd. What is seen as a menacing creature is now bringing so a great deal joy and enjoy.”
The shark’s leotard features 11 colors stitched alongside one another to kind two “Progress” flags — an up-to-date kind of the Satisfaction flag designed in 2018.
Together with the regular colors, the Development flag consists of black and brown stripes to signify marginalized LGBTQ communities of colour, as well as pink, mild blue and white that aspect on the transgender Delight flag.
Even ahead of it was officially unveiled on February 8, Development Shark had become a viral sensation following Sydney WorldPride produced a computer-created preview.
