Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of the Economy, meets with Canadian energy companies

The Secretary of Economy, Raquel Buenrostromet with representatives of Canadian energy companies to review the “positive agreements” reached with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and they agreed to meet again at the end of February, the agency said on Monday.

The president said on Thursday that he met with four Canadian companies in the electricity sector and resolved concerns regarding their operation in the Latin American nation, after repeated complaints from authorities and companies in that country about a change in the rules of the game.

A week earlier, during the North American Leaders Summit held in the Mexican capital, López Obrador spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about the matter, for which Ottawa and Washington began a consultation process within the framework of the regional trade agreement, T-MEC.

The Ministry of Economy did not offer more details about the date of the next meeting or about the companies that participated in the meeting.

Since he came to power in 2018, AMLO has promoted legal changes to favor the state company Federal electricity commission (CFE), giving it preponderance over foreign and renewable energy firms, some of them from Canada.
