Reuters reported that gunmen killed at least 22 civilians in southwestern Niger, less than a week after unidentified gunmen killed 58 villagers in the same area.
The attackers raided three villages in the Tillabri region that borders Mali and Burkina Faso. A security source told the agency that “armed men from the (terrorist) organization ISIS launched the attacks,” while two local sources did not specify who was responsible.
The local branch of ISIS is active in the area, and it was blamed for previous attacks that killed scores of civilians and soldiers.
On March 15, the Security Commissioner for the Nigerian state of Kaduna, Samuel Arwan, announced that armed men had kidnapped students and teachers in a primary school in the state in the northwest of the country.
This is the fifth mass kidnapping of schools since December in the country.
