Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced during a press conference with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, that the “Treaty of Good Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation” between the two countries had been automatically extended for another five years.
“This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship and Cooperation, which is very important. Over the past 20 years, this treaty has laid a solid legal foundation for the sustainable development of Russia-China relations, and contributed to the development of bilateral relations,” the Chinese foreign minister said.
He expressed his confidence that the treaty would help the two parties to reach new agreements, in addition to that it would be a factor in developing relations.
The Chinese minister also indicated that the document will need new content over time, in order to adapt it to the new conditions of bilateral relations.
The treaty was signed by the leaders of Russia and China, Vladimir Putin and Jiang Zemin, in July 2001, and on February 28, 2002 it was finally ratified.
