© Reuters. Sao Paulo gains 1.79% weekly due to the institutional strength of Brazil
Sao Paulo, Jan 13 (.).- The Sao Paulo Stock Exchange fell 0.84% in the session this Friday, but gained 1.79% accumulated in a week marked by the strong institutional response to the violent assault to the headquarters of the three powers by radical Bolsonaristas.
The , benchmark for the São Paulo stock market, closed with 110,916 basis points on its second consecutive day in the red, after losing 0.59% on Thursday, despite favorable winds from Wall Street.
In the foreign exchange market, the US dollar appreciated a slight 0.13% today and closed at 5,105 reais for purchase and 5,106 reais for sale, at the commercial exchange rate.
During the week, the greenback lost 2.48% against the Brazilian currency.
Financial operators did not succumb to the chaos generated last Sunday in Brasilia by thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who invaded and vandalized the offices of the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court for four hours.
On the contrary, they reacted positively to the rapid and strong response of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches against the attempt to forcibly overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and return Bolsonaro to power.
They also considered positive, in general terms, the package of economic measures presented by the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, to reduce the country’s fiscal deficit.
The second week of the year was also marked by the accounting scandal at Lojas Americanas, one of the largest retail companies in Brazil, which detected a hole in its balance sheet of nearly 20,000 million reais (today about 3,900 million dollars).
After plummeting 77% on Thursday, the shares of the retail chain rebounded 15.8%, being the most benefited value of the session this Friday.
The titles of the department stores Magazine Luiza (+7.5%) and Carrefour (EPA:) Brazil (+2.5 %).
On the contrary, the biggest losses were registered by the meat company BRF (-6.5%), the footwear firm Alpargatas (-6.1%) and the travel agency CVC Brasil (-5.9%).
The volume traded on the Ibovespa reached 20,500 million reais (about 4,000 million dollars), in 3,612,245 financial operations.
The most exchanged papers were the ordinary ones of the mining giant Vale (+0.09%).
