Senate approves Carlos Joaquín as ambassador to Canada

The plenary session of the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union ratified the appointment of Carlos Manuel Joaquín González as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Mexico in Canada, by 23 votes, 12 against and one abstention.

In the act, the ex-governor of Quintana Roo gave legal protest of the position for which he was appointed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

The Mexico-Canada relationship, said the PRI senator, is based on friendship and common aspirations for progress between two diverse and multicultural societies, which despite their contrasts have enormous sympathy for each other.

According to the Tlaxcalan woman, Canadian immigration policy is of the greatest interest to the Mexican State.

“The greater openness in terms of the immigration provision that the Canadian authorities have and have had is notable, which allows us to enrich the positions on the matter before our common commercial partner, the United States.”

He expressed the hope that the immigration issue will be addressed with civil courage by Mexican and Canadian authorities at the summit that will take place in Mexico next week and in which the United States will also participate.

“Mexicans and Canadians share a successful migration experience: the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, in which more than 25 Mexican workers travel annually to produce vegetables, legumes, flowers, trees and fruits in Canada.

“A migratory movement of workers in a regulated, dignified and effective manner that is undoubtedly perfectible, but which so far is a sign that when there is political will it is possible to find ways to agree on migratory flows where human rights are respected and opportunities are provided. work…”

Migration, he opined, has to be seen not as a security issue, but as job options.

Non-party senator Emilio Álvarez announced his vote against the ratification of Carlos Joaquín because “the pedagogy of the message of appointing former opposition governors (ambassadors) is surrender and insubordination; We are not going to accompany that message, that pedagogy.”
