The Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, expressed his concern about the spread of the extreme right in Europe, and the escalation of its aggressive and hostile activities against Muslims in many Western countries.
During his meeting with the German ambassador in Cairo Cyril Jean Nunn, Al-Tayyib stressed that “the world today needs more than ever to respect pluralism and accept the other, for voices of reason and wisdom to rise and the sounds of destruction and devastation disappear.”
He added, “The world is now fully aware of the exploitation of some groups of religion to achieve purposeful goals in line with their ideologies.”
He said, “We in Al-Azhar extend our hands to all countries and institutions to participate in confronting and resisting these groups, and to eradicate this perverted, misleading thought. We have taken many practical steps in this direction, most notably coordination with the major religious institutions in Europe, foremost of which is the Vatican, and Al-Azhar was established.” An observatory to combat extremism, and a program to train imams from different countries of the world at Al-Azhar International Academy to train imams and preachers, to train them to deconstruct the ideas of extremist groups.
