Dozens of Sudanese protesters on Sunday burned an Israeli flag in central Khartoum, in opposition to normalization with Israel.
This came during a protest stand organized by the “Popular Forces to Resist Normalization”, in front of the Cabinet headquarters in Khartoum, in opposition to “Abraham Agreements.”
The protesters told France Press that they represent “the popular forces to resist normalization,” and they carried banners reading “normalization is treason,” “normalization is a crime,” and “normalization is an American blackmail in exchange for submission to the Americans.”
On the sixth of January, during the visit of the US Secretary of the Treasury, Stephen Mnuchin, to Khartoum, Sudan signed a normalization agreement with Israel, coinciding with its financial assistance from the United States, a few weeks after Khartoum was removed from the list of countries accused by the United States of financing terrorism.
The agreement still requires legislative approval before it enters into force, noting that there is no transitional parliament in Sudan yet.
A joint transitional government between civilians and the military has held power in Sudan since the ouster of President Omar al-Bashir in April 2019, and this government seeks to rebuild the economy after decades of sanctions and internal conflicts.
