Summit of the Pacific Alliance will be held in Peru in December after suspension in Mexico

The presidential summit of the Pacific alliance will be held in Lima in Decembersaid two sources from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, after the suspension of the meeting in Mexico for not having the presence of President Pedro Castillo.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had previously announced the cancellation of the November 24-26 summit in Mexico City because Peru’s opposition-dominated Congress rejected Castillo’s request to travel to the meeting.

It is confirmed, it will be in Lima,” one of the sources from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry told Reuters. “The date is yet to be defined, but it would probably be December 7 and 8,” he said.

At the meeting, Castillo should receive the pro tempore presidency of the group made up of Mexico, Colombia, Peru and Chile.

“The meeting of the Pacific Alliance was suspended because the president of Peru was not allowed to attend,” López Obrador previously told reporters in Mexico.

“We are exploring the possibility of holding an act in Peru or making a decision by consulting the members,” he said.

In a ceremony in the courtyard of the Government Palace in Lima, President Castillo had earlier greeted the willingness of his Mexican colleague for the summit to move to Lima.

“I want to salute the firm, correct and blameless decision of the brother president of the Republic of Mexico who has just made the decision to come to Peru,” he said in a speech.

“Brother AMLO we await you with open arms in Peru (…) and welcome also to the other brother countries that are part of the Pacific Alliance,” he said.
