Jenin camp- Exactly at eight o’clock yesterday evening, Sunday, cars of Palestinian citizens began arriving at the courtyard of Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin city North West BankFamilies from Jenin camp are transported to spend the night in the square until the next morning.
In the square designated to receive ambulances, the number of citizens increased significantly as time progressed, while each of them carried small bags and a number of blankets.
The Uday Kamil family is one of the families that arrived at the hospital last night. The father, who was transporting his two daughters to the emergency department, said that it was not the first time they had come to the hospital at night, and that they had been spending nearly a week every night here, and then returned to their home in the camp in the morning.
He explains, “I fear for my family, so I have to move them to the hospital yard, even though it is not completely safe, but here is better than being in the camp at night, as there is no other way to protect them.”
With the repeated night raids on the camp and the Israeli occupation bulldozers and vehicles deliberately destroying its infrastructure, residents try to leave it at the end of each day and move to places they believe are safer for them.
Incursions and destruction
The camp has been witnessing since the beginning of the aggression against Gaza strip Daily waves of displacement to hospital yards and nearby residential neighborhoods in the city of Jenin, while some families moved to neighboring villages in the governorate.
Uday continues, “The situation is frightening. The raids are almost daily and continuous, and each raid is bigger and more difficult than the previous one. The occupation forces destroyed the camp street, cutting off its north from its center and south. This is what forces us to leave our homes and leave the camp before storming it.”
He added, “A week ago, occupation bulldozers bulldozed a large plot of land close to the camp. Many people felt that this was a prelude to a major operation inside the camp.”
With the expansion of the Israeli military incursions, the destruction of the camp’s infrastructure, and the bombing of homes and places where resistance fighters gather, the residents’ fears increased that Israel would carry out a large-scale incursion into the city of Jenin and its camp, which might extend for days or turn into an expanded military operation that would remind them of the 2002 invasion, which lasted 11 days.
No safety
Inside his house, which was largely destroyed during the occupation’s storming of the camp last July, Abu Jihad al-Ghoul makes a phone call to his sister, who left her home in the Al-Hawashin neighborhood in the camp and moved to the village of Burqin, southwest of the city of Jenin.
Abu Jihad describes the situation in the neighborhood as very difficult, and life there has become dangerous. “There is no safety for people’s lives there, and the military bulldozers did not leave a street there without completely sweeping it away.”
He confirms, “My sisters evacuated their homes. One of them lives in Al-Hawashin neighborhood and the other in Al-Damj neighborhood. In every incursion, the two neighborhoods are bombed and their streets are bulldozed. The bombing forced people to leave, and there is constant fear. People do not want to live under siege and have homes demolished on their heads as happened in 2002.”
Inside the camp, conditions appear to be extremely difficult with the absence of basic services for the residents, and the continuing electricity cuts with every almost daily incursion by the occupation forces. On the ground, residents face difficulties in moving between the camp’s lanes and alleys, due to the destruction of the streets and the continuous bulldozing of its entrances.
Abu Jihad says, “Today the rain fell, making movement more difficult, and puddles of water spread in the swept streets, and it made it difficult to destroy the sewage networks that caused it to come out into the streets. We are walking on wastewater.”
Acts of sabotage
Residents believe that these acts of sabotage may be a prelude to major military operations that will be carried out by the Israeli occupation forces in the Jenin camp, and they fear that the siege will be tightened if their expectations come true, which would mean preventing more than 14,000 people living there from leaving it.
Since the storming of Jenin camp on the third of last July, families have begun renting homes outside it, and the number of people searching for homes to rent has increased significantly since the seventh of last October.
The matter went beyond moving to homes inside the city of Jenin, as a number of camp residents arrived in distant villages, all of them trying to protect their families from an expanded incursion into the camp.
Ismail Abu Qatna, a resident of Al-Joura neighborhood, which was away from the destruction and bombing for a while, says, “My family leaves our house on a daily basis. At sunset, we go to the village of Kafr Dan, which is close to the camp.”
He added, “In the beginning we used to say that we were accustomed to their continuous raids, but today Israel has begun bombing homes and expanding its raids, sometimes storming the camp for more than 12 hours. It is clear that this is a new and ongoing policy, and there is a fear that it will expand into something bigger.”
In the camp, whose streets were flooded with rainwater and mud as a result of its bulldozing, a large number of people could be seen returning to it carrying their belongings, and as its residents say, the neighborhoods are almost empty every night, while life returns to the camp in the morning.
Ismail explains, “I feel that the Jourat al-Dhahab neighborhood has become a ghost neighborhood, in which only a few people remain. It is an exhausting way of living. The daily continuous deportation to and from the camp, and even if Israel does not invade it, what happens to us daily is difficult and unbearable if it continues for a long time.” .
He added, “My uncle owns two small rooms in the village of Kafr Dan, and we all crowded together. Even the children’s lifestyle changed and they dropped out of their schools. Our work was greatly disrupted and many of them were damaged. We began to feel that our lives resembled the lives of the people of Gaza in many aspects.”
The resistance is ready
The Palestinian resistance fighters in the camp believe that what is happening in their camp and the rest of the Palestinian camps is a dangerous and unprecedented matter, and there is no need to wait for an invasion to occur in order to deal with it with caution and prepare for it.
The fighter in the Jenin Brigade, “NN,” says, “Every incursion into the camp is major and dangerous, and targeting by bombing is a major matter, and bombing by Apaches is a dangerous matter, so we do not need to expect a major invasion of the camp, as what is happening has gone beyond the subject of the invasion in the first place.”
“NN” adds that the invasion of the camp in 2002 lasted 11 days and the number of martyrs was about 7, while the number of martyrs of the camp since the beginning reached “Al-Aqsa flood“To 50 martyrs, in addition to many serious injuries and the systematic and widespread destruction of all infrastructure in the camp.
He continues, “We can call every raid in which 14 martyrs fall, such as last week’s raid that lasted more than 15 hours, an invasion of the camp.”
The fighter in the Jenin Brigade says, “People have the right to feel fear. We are in a time of war, and what Israel is doing may give indications that make people think and think beyond these facts, but we say that its goals have been clear for more than two years, which is to eliminate the resistance.” In the West Bank and eliminating the camps, especially the Jenin camp, because it is a symbol of resistance in the West Bank.”
The resistance fighters confirm that Israel’s targeting of families makes people resort to leaving the camp at night and spending the night outside, and they stress that the resistance, if any invasion occurs, will defend the camp until the last bullet.
