She’s one of the most famous people on the planet, but at first glance, an off-duty Taylor Swift could be mistaken for a regular person waiting in line at H&M: a faded pink vest top, light-wash denim shorts, and inconspicuous trainers. This look, while relatively unremarkable, is remarkable in how Swiftian it is. Because even as she is performing to tens of thousands of people at a stadium tour, Swift’s wardrobe resembles that of someone who might also be performing at a homegrown talent contest. Lots of meringue-skirt prom dresses, slogan T-shirts, and sequined bodysuits. Is this from Anthropologie?
Her current Eras tour revisits all 10 albums that Swift has released, and with it, the costumes. Since emerging into public view in 2006 as a 16-year-old wunderkind, Swift has become one of the most commercially successful musicians of all time – last year her songs garnered 36.6 billion streams – but her aesthetic has never inspired the same level of attention. She often skips the Met Gala and is rarely in attendance at fashion week. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though. She is a wholesome and cinematic hitmaker, breezing through awkward confessionals on Lover and small-town stasis on Midnights – all of which is infused with an unfashionable earnestness.
