With the participation of 37 countries and 430 publishers, the 31st edition of the Doha International Book Fair will start tomorrow, Thursday, and continue until January 22, at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Center.
The exhibition – which is being held this year under the name “Science is Light” – witnesses the participation of 37 countries, while the number of direct publishers reaches 430, and the number of agencies is 90 indirectly.
This session is of special importance, as the exhibition has completed 50 years of its life, since its first launch in 1972, as it is the first exhibition of its kind to be held in Qatar and the entire Gulf region.
The United States of America will be the guest of honor for the next session of the exhibition, against the backdrop of the Qatar-America Year of Culture 2021, where this hosting will witness a presentation of American culture and the presentation of intellectual production through the various exhibition activities.
The Qatari Ministry of Culture will provide support and facilities to publishing houses participating in the exhibition, such as customs clearance and not imposing fees on agencies. These facilities come in order to support publishers in spreading culture and exhibition and developing the publishing industry.

In addition to the large local participation in the exhibition, Gulf and Arab participation comes through the participation of the General Secretariat of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, the Ministry of Heritage and Culture in the Sultanate of Oman, as well as the Sharjah Book Authority, in addition to the participation of the ministries of culture in Morocco, Algeria, Sudan and Egypt represented by the Egyptian Authority General Book and House of Egyptian Books.
Director of the Doha International Book Fair Jassim Ahmed Al Buainain said that in light of the ambition in each session of the fair to present the new, American publishing houses will participate for the first time in the fair, and the Italian Embassy in Doha will participate in a special pavilion concerned with displaying children’s books and establishing special activities for them, along with Participation in the Bologna International Fair of Children’s Books, which is considered the most important fair for children’s books in the world.
The director of the Doha International Fair added that the Ministry of Culture is moving in the future to make the upcoming editions of the Doha International Book Fair exceptional, so that it becomes a cultural festival located in different regions of the country and is not limited to the current exhibition area only.

All scheduled precautions will be taken, to ensure the safety and health of everyone inside the exhibition corridors, as entry and exit procedures will ensure safety, as the capacity of the exhibition’s organization will not exceed 30 percent.
Entry to the exhibition will be through pre-registration of visitors via an electronic link, and its visit will be limited to those vaccinated against the Corona virus, including children aged 12 years and over who have taken the second dose 14 days, or those who have recovered from Covid-19 infection for a period of no more than Less than 12 months, while the attendance of children under 12 years will not exceed 10% of the total attendance.
In turn, the Head of the Cultural Committee of the Doha International Book Fair, Jawaher Al-Badr, said that this year’s session will be distinguished in light of the presence of a new youth leadership at the head of the Ministry of Culture, which will reflect on the development and cultural development of this sector, as well as with regard to the cultural activities that will be presented during this period. session of the exhibition.
Al-Badr confirmed that the upcoming session of the fair will witness a great moral momentum represented in the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the launch of the first book fair in Doha, and the occasion that prompted us to launch many distinguished cultural events to celebrate this occasion.
Regarding the cultural events that the exhibition will witness, Al-Badr explained that “the 31st session will witness the inauguration of several cultural activities suitable for groups of children, as they are the generation in which we must instill a love of science, reading and culture, without forgetting the diversity of cultural activities directed to all segments and age groups, and the participation of a distinguished elite of Researchers, experts, academics and intellectuals.
The Head of the Cultural Committee of the Doha International Book Fair pointed out that some of the lectures and attendance interventions were transferred to the remote communication system, and through the means of visual communication, in light of the repercussions of the Corona virus and the acceleration of the spread of its modifiers.
The activities of the exhibition this year contribute to enriching the cultural scene through a number of theatrical activities, most notably the theatrical performance “Al-Asma’i Baquh”, a dramatic work interspersed with lyrical paintings, and its duration is one and a half hours, written in simple classical Arabic, and the play talks about the theft of the famous Al-Asma’i poem.
