After a new wave of cases, the NBA has been forced to do what seemed inevitable: postpone games. As reported by Chris Haynes, a journalist from Yahoo Sports, the Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Atlanta Hawks matchup will not be played tonight. Minutes later, Adrian Wojnarowski, from ESPNHe added that the duels between the Brooklyn Nets and the Denver Nuggets and the New Orleans Pelicans and the Philadelphia 76ers will also not be able to take place tonight.
Finally, the NBA itself made it official that there will be five postponed games. Joining the aforementioned three tonight are the Orlando Magic against the Toronto Raptors on Monday and the Washington Wizards against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday.
Following the positives that kept Evan Mobley and Isaac Okoro from playing in the win over the Bucks, the Cavaliers added five new players to the casualty list just hours ago. As a result of this new outbreak, the Cleveland franchise did not have the necessary minimum of eight active players to play its game tonight against the Hakws, who have the Trae Young loss.
The Nets, too, have been hit hard by the virus. The Brooklynites have 10 players in health and safety protocols, including Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving. On Saturday they already had to play their game against the Magic with only eight players available. The NBA is determined to suspend its next two meetings (Nuggets and Wizards).
The Sixers live the same situation. According to Rich Hofmann of The Athletic, they only have five fully available players. To the casualties from COVID would be added the physical problems of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Danny Green. As reported by the aforementioned media, the game against the Pelicans would also be postponed.
With this decision-making, the league accumulates postponed games. To those mentioned must be added those who have not played the Chicago Bulls for the same reasons against the Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors.
