Paris, Nov 10 (.).- The French employers’ association Medef left this Thursday satisfied with the meeting organized in Paris with the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, who presented his priorities for French companies to increase their investments and showed no intention of marking a breakdown in macroeconomic policy.
“It has been a real work meeting” in which Petro “has listened and responded precisely,” Gérard Wolf, president of the working group on Sustainable Cities of the Movement of French Companies (Medef), told EFE.
Petro asked the heads of the thirty French companies that participated in the meeting “to invest more, in association with local companies,” according to the head of the employers’ association.
And that these investments be made “with a logic of decarbonization”, thinking “of the development of communities”, particularly in rural areas of Colombia, said Wolf, who assured that this is “a message understood by our companies.”
Asked if there is any concern about the possibility that a new left-wing president like Petro could mark a turning point in the traditionally liberal policies of previous Colombian governments towards foreign investors, the French employer’s official replied that in the speech of the Head of State there was no “will to break” in that field.
Above all, he added, when it comes to international financing issues.
In addition, he noted that Petro “has insisted on his will to eradicate corruption”, a message that gives confidence to French companies.
The four priority sectors for Petro to attract investment from French companies are transport, energy, essential services and education and sustainable tourism.
France is among the first foreign investors in France and is the first in terms of jobs: its 250 companies located there employ 150,000 people.
Large French companies such as the manufacturer of trains and subways participated in the meeting at the Medef headquarters, in which Petro was accompanied by the Foreign Minister, Álvaro Leyva, and by a delegation of a dozen people. Alstom (EPA:), the Veolia water and waste treatment company (EPA:) or the Transdev transport company.
The meeting took place immediately after the working lunch offered at the Elysée Palace by the French president to the head of the Colombian State.
