The British newspaper “The Guardian” confirmed that a person claims to have seen the Italian researcher Giulio Regeni inside a police station in Cairo before his disappearance in January 2016.
The newspaper reported today, Thursday, that the witness, whom Italian investigators consider credible, claimed that Regeni, who found his body with signs of torture nine days after his disappearance, was detained by National Security officials inside a police station in Dokki in central Cairo, adding that these officials “were acting. As if they are above the law. “
The witness said, according to the newspaper, that Regeni (whom the person later recognized based on pictures in the media) spoke first in Italian and asked to be given contact with a lawyer or the Rome consulate, but Egyptian officials were aware in advance that he was fluent in Arabic and asked him to speak it.
The witness claimed that he heard a dialogue between these officials that suggested that they had penetrated Regeni’s mobile phone in order to impede the investigation of the Italian authorities.
Then Regeni was taken blindfolded, according to the witness, in a civilian car to the Ministry of Interior and National Security headquarters in Lazoghly.
The newspaper pointed out that these testimonies are among the evidence collected by Italian prosecutors in an effort to confirm their allegations that four officials in the Egyptian national security sector are responsible for Regeni’s disappearance and death.
In total, Italian prosecutors announced that they had collected testimonies from three unnamed witnesses, alleging that Regeni was tortured in Lazoghly’s residence.
The Egyptian authorities refuse to hold her responsible for Regeni’s death.
