The number of adolescents and unaccompanied children detained along the border with Mexico has reached record numbers, according to government data seen by ABC News.
The data said that there are now 4,276 children in custody, up from about 3,400 earlier in the week, indicating an increase of 25%.
Sources told the network that overcrowding in places of detention increased by 363%, indicating that the average time children spend in facilities designated for the detention of adult males for a period of 24 hours increased to 117 hours, or 45 hours longer than the legal time allowed, and this increased Time significantly over the past week.
Congresswoman Veronica Escobar explained that most children are fed, but they sleep on the floor and wrap blankets, noting that she visited a facility in Texas that did not enjoy any kind of social distancing.
