(Trends Wide) — The United States facilitated the departure of four US citizens from Afghanistan via a land route to a third country, a senior State Department official said Monday.
“Our embassy received the Americans when they crossed the border into the third country,” the official told Trends Wide.
The official confirmed that these are the first four Americans “we have supported in this way” since the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.
The news of the departure comes nearly a week after the last US troops left Afghanistan to meet the Aug. 31 deadline and as the Biden administration comes under pressure to help already lagging Americans. the Afghan allies who helped the United States leave the country.
White House Secretary General Ron Klain told Trends Wide’s Dana Bash on Sunday that the Biden administration believes there are about 100 American citizens left in Afghanistan and that the United States will find a way to remove the remaining Americans.
“We are going to find a way to get those who want to leave Afghanistan. We know that many of them have relatives, many of them want to stay, but those who want to leave, we are going to remove,” Klain said in “State of the Union”.
State Department spokesman Ned Price said last week that the department “was not in a position to talk in great detail about” land routes. “He added,” But I think it reinforces the point that we are looking at all options available to safeguard Americans wishing to leave Afghanistan. “
Last week, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said the US military and its allies evacuated 6,000 US citizens and a “total of more than 124,000 civilians” from Afghanistan in the course of a few weeks after the Taliban will take control of the country.
