On March 18, the World Health Organization (WHO) reviewed the information on “cVDPV2” cases detected in Tajikistan and classified the situation as a Level 2 emergency.
It is reported that the first case of “cVDPV2”, accompanied by the emergence of acute flaccid paralysis, was reported on November 22 of last year in Khatlon district, and it was related to a viral strain currently circulating in Pakistan.
The second case of paralysis was confirmed in February of this year for a child who had symptoms of flaccid paralysis in the Khatlon area, while on March 8, two other cases of polio were confirmed in the city of Gisar.
Moreover, cVDPV2 was also detected in three environmental samples taken at the newly established monitoring site in Dushanbe.
The World Health Organization said in a statement that it is conducting a comprehensive investigation of the outbreak, including hospital visits, contact tracing and reviewing data on vaccination coverage of all levels.
In February 2021, Tajikistan completed a nationally planned vaccination campaign using inactivated poliovirus vaccine, which aims to ensure that all children who may have missed vaccination against type 2 poliovirus are protected from contracting the disease, and the possibility of paralysis in the event of Their contact with the virus, while the Ministry of Health in Tajikistan has not yet commented on the WHO statement.
