They approve reform to the Law of Urban Gardens of CDMX

In order to increase the agri-food crops on the Mexico City and also that pollution rates can be reduced, the local Congress approved a reform to the Law of Urban Gardens.

In this regard, the president of the Commission for the Preservation of the Environment, Climate Change and Ecological Protection, Tania Nanette Larios Pérez, explained that the changes consist of avoiding the use of agrochemicals in the urban gardens of the country’s capital, such as fertilizers, pesticides and pesticides.

The reason is that these produce toxicity in crops and are harmful to human health.

“The goal is to promote actions that help clean the atmosphere, produce oxygen, improve the urban environment and social welfare,” said the state legislator.

He specified that it also seeks to promote food sovereignty and security, avoiding agrochemical crops, to protect the flora and fauna of the country’s capital.

“It can be said that urban gardens can serve to mitigate climate change, protect the environment, generate self-employment conditions and contribute, partially, to food security,” the opinion stressed.

The deputy said that the reform is also due to what was announced by the World Bank, since since 2007 more than half of the total population lives in cities and it is expected that within eight years this number increases to 60 percent.

“In other words, the future of the planet is to be more urbanized, hence the importance of urban gardens, recognized by the United Nations Organization, for being a type of cultivation through which a local diet can be achieved, sustainable and organic”, considered Larios Pérez.
