The events and conclusions of the COP 27 They call on society and States to redouble their efforts to face the climate emergency. “Addressing and counteracting this unprecedented crisis requires the forceful participation of all sectors, with individual and, above all, collective solutions, with a long-term vision,” thus a group of environmental leaders in the country emerged seeking to promote A Socio-environmental Pact for Mexico.
It should be noted that in various regions of the world, green pacts have been proposed as a political alternative to move towards an energy and ecological transition with social justice. These are coherent packages of legislative, public and budgetary policies aligned with a vision for a sustainable future, where ecological preservation and restoration is intertwined with social well-being and the reduction of structural inequalities.
In this sense, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, as part of the pactoverde.mx project, summoned 18 young people from various states of the Republic to participate in the 2022 Progressive Youth Workshop (TJP), in order to develop the necessary leadership skills. to build an Agenda for a Socio-environmental Pact for Mexico.
From the Forum: Towards a Socio-environmental Pact for Mexico: Priorities, proposals and alliances before representatives of more than 40 organizations of civil society, academia, private initiative and government, it is intended to create collaboration networks to strengthen this political agenda with an impact on the electoral process of 2024.
Around 60 people participated in this conference, organized around the key thematic axes of this Agenda to advance towards the desired social and ecological transformation: a) Just energy transition and decarbonization, b) Conservation of Biodiversity and Oceans, c) Security and food sovereignty, d) sustainable productive development and circular economy, e) water management, and f) cities and mobility.
This participatory exercise is a showcase in which these issues are intended to be discussed in the next electoral process, seeking to directly influence the platforms of all the candidates and make the just ecological transition a transversal priority on the public and political agenda.
The Forum began with the presentation of the Agenda by Atzín Ramírez and Aurelién Guilabert, graduates of the TJP 2022, followed by a plenary discussion in which the following participated: Alexandra Haas; Vidal Llerenas, former mayor of Azcapotzalco and former federal deputy; Estefanía de Garay, national secretary for environmental affairs of Movimiento Ciudadano; Rodolfo Osorio, general director of relations with civil society of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Astrid Becker, director of the regional project for Social-Ecological Transformation of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation; and Mario Duarte, Alexandra Hass, executive director of Oxfam Mexico, explained that the agenda Towards a Socio-environmental Pact in Mexico is a starting point to think about the role of the State and the distribution of power, with a view to rethinking “the productive, economic and social of the country, since there is no strong State without strong collection”.
For his part, Vidal Llerenas, former mayor of Azcapotzalco and former federal representative, stressed that in the context of the climate crisis, it is necessary to promote a mission-oriented industrial policy while addressing the challenges of mobility and water supply in the Mexican capital.
In this vein, Estefanía de Garay, national secretary for environmental affairs of Movimiento Ciudadano, called to promote the declaration of a Climate Emergency by working locally to implement action plans. “We have to get out of carbonization with strong budgets.”
According to Rodolfo Osorio, general director of relations with civil society of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it is urgent to position the environmental agenda in all sectors and have a national green plan that involves governments, congresses, civil society, academia and also to the private initiative, since large companies are the ones that generate environmental impacts. “The call to action is now.”
