(CNN) — Kanye West had his performance at this year’s Grammy Awards canceled due to “concerning behavior online,” three sources close to the artist confirmed to CNN.
The decision, first reported by The Blast, comes days after West – who now goes by Ye – was temporarily suspended from Instagram after using a racial slur against “Daily Show” host Trevor Noah.
Noah will also host the Grammy Awards next month.
West’s derogatory social media post was in response to Noah’s concern expressed on his show about the singer’s recent treatment of his ex-wife Kim Kardashian and “Saturday Night Live” star boyfriend Pete Davidson during an episode last week. last week.
“You might not feel sorry for Kim because she’s rich and famous,” Noah said in the segment. “But what’s happening is terrifying and highlights what so many women go through when they choose to leave.”
A source close to Trevor Noah told CNN that he had nothing to do with Kanye West’s Grammy performance being cancelled. The person added that the host hasn’t had any conversations about West with producers or the Recording Academy, which is running the ceremony.
“Trevor never asked the Grammys to ban Kanye’s performance. He wasn’t offended by Kanye’s Instagram post and Trevor responded on Instagram. The idea that Trevor Noah or his team asked the Grammys to ban Kanye West’s performance It’s ridiculous,” the source said.
CNN has not yet received comment from the Recording Academy and West has not commented publicly.
West is nominated for five Grammy Awards this year, including album of the year. It is not clear if he plans to attend the ceremony.
Trevor Noah commented on Kanye West’s since-deleted Instagram post with a message of support for the musician. And he wrote that “it breaks my heart to see you like this” and added that his music had been an “indelible” part of his life.
Early Sunday morning, Noah tweeted, “I said advise Kanye, don’t cancel Kanye.”
News that West’s performance was canceled at this year’s ceremony came as a bit of a shock to his fans considering he hadn’t been in the first round of artists announced last week for the 54th Grammy Awards. More performances will be announced in the days leading up to the show.
Among the artists who will take the stage are Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, BTS and Olivia Rodrigo.
The Grammys will air April 3 on CBS.
