Watford forward Troy Deeney has claimed there is a ‘big club bias’ in VAR decisions after West Brom had a penalty controversially overturned against Manchester United on Saturday.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men secured a 1-0 victory against the Baggies at Old Trafford thanks to a spot kick of their own from Bruno Fernandes, but the away side were incredulous minutes earlier when their own effort was denied after the Portuguese midfielder had clattered into Sam Gallagher.
Referee David Coote initially awarded the penalty before changing his mind after looking at the pitch-side monitor, and Deeney believes the decision would have stood if it was initially given to United.

The Red Devils gave a penalty away during their 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday
But referee decided to overturn the call after watching the incident on the pitch side monitor
‘I still think there is big club bias when it comes to VAR,’ he told talkSport.
‘You’ve still go tthe human element of the referees that are operating it. It happens, look at the Manchester United game. The penalty has been changed, he went over there. He wasn’t sure and still took the penalty away. If that was Man United and it was the other way around, the penalty stands.’
Deeney was asked by host Laura Woods if he had experience of bigger sides being favoured with decisions during his time as a player, and he said it was simply ‘human nature’ to do so – insisting the referees were not at fault.
Bilic claimed West Brom were denied the spot kick as they are viewed as a ‘little’ club
‘You’re knowing if its a 50/50, it’s going to be more like 70/30 in their favour. [The referees are not doing it on purpose.
‘We got it this season in the championship, we’re the big team in the championship. We scored a goal that didn’t go over the line and they gave us a goal.
‘When you’re a bigger team and you scream loud enough you’re going to get more attention than if it’s a lesser team.
VAR remains contentious in the top flight after making a series of controversial decisions
‘It’s just what happens, it’s just human nature. I’m not getting on the referees – it’s just what’s happened over time.’
Former United defender Rio Ferdinand slammed the decision to rule out West Brom’s goal as ‘disgraceful’ while Baggies boss Slaven Bilic said he was ‘extremely disappointed’ and claimed the call was made because ‘it was little West Brom’.
VAR remains contentious in the top flight with a handful of goals ruled out due to marginal offsides while managers have hit out at fouls failing to be punished – such as Jordan Pickford’s horror lunge on Virgil van Dijk in the Merseyside Derby.
