Turkish authorities announced on Thursday that police had arrested 13 people over the slogans they chanted at the International Women’s Day protests.
An opposition parliamentarian said they were detained for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a week after the president pledged to protect freedom of expression.
The local governor’s office said that prosecutors issued arrest warrants after a video of a group chanting slogans against the president during a march in Istanbul on March 8, 2021.
He added that 13 people were arrested, one of whom was a minor among 18 people who had been identified.
Erdogan pledged last week that his government would encourage freedom of expression and the right to a fair trial under an action plan adopted by the government, whose critics said it had failed to address concerns about the erosion of human rights in Turkey.
The Progressive Lawyers Association said on Twitter that the authorities had arrested 12 women in home raids on suspicion of insulting the president.
