The representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Jordan, Dominic Bartsch, expressed his concern over the imminent return of Syrian refugees to their country, considering The “resettlement” program for these refugees is a responsibility-sharing with countries of asylum.
Bartsch said – in statements to “Anatolia” news agency – that the Syrian conflict more than 10 years ago produced a huge number of refugees, who found shelter in neighboring countries, and a very large number of internally displaced people as well.
“After several years of these refugee movements, we noticed the pros and cons. As for the positive side, the refugees were able to make good progress in being able to stand on their own, and able to work in some informal sectors to support themselves,” he added.
As for the negative side, the UN official noted that “unfortunately, it does not seem possible for these people to return to their homeland in the near future, and the refugees will have to continue to wait until conditions are favorable.”
“This puts us in a very difficult situation, because many of them still hope to return to Syria in the future. At the same time, of course, they now need to know if they are able to,” he added.
Regarding what is known as the “resettlement” program, which includes the transfer of refugees from one country of asylum to another, the UN official stressed that this is a very important part of the solutions to the refugee problem; There are a lot of countries that offer this option, to take them to a third country to start a new life there.
Bartsch added that despite the success of the resettlement program, the numbers of refugees who have been resettled do not live up to the aspirations of the United Nations; As their number from Jordan reached only 4,000 last year, and a percentage of no more than 1% of the total number of refugees from Syria.
Jordan talks about the presence of about 1.3 million Syrians on its soil, adding those who entered the country before the start of the revolution in 2011 – by virtue of lineage, intermarriage and trade – to the list of those listed in the records of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
