Veracruz Congress votes in favor of the reform to expand the presence of the Army in the streets

With 38 votes in favor, nine against and one abstention, the Plenary session of the Congress of Veracruz approved this Tuesday the opinion that extends to 2028 the presence of the Armed Forces in public security tasks.

In an extraordinary session, the local legislators of Veracruz waived the regulatory procedures and approved the opinion sent by the Chamber of Deputies that reforms the Fifth Transitory Article of the decree by which various provisions of the Political Constitution are reformed, added and repealed, in matters of National Guardpublished in the Official Gazette (DOF) on March 26, 2019.

The vote in the local congress took place one day after the visit of the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto López, who went to the venue to talk with the legislators about this reform.

The reform establishes that during the nine years following the entry into force of the aforementioned Decree, while the National Guard develops its structure, capabilities and territorial implementation, the President of the Republic may dispose of the permanent Armed Forces in public security tasks.

As it is a constitutional reform, the approval of at least 17 state Congresses is required.

The Congress of Veracruz joined the legislatures of Oaxaca, Campeche, Mexico City, Chiapas, Sinaloa, Tabasco, Baja California and Puebla in approving this opinion.
