New York, USA (CNN) – Visa said on Wednesday it will allow customers to make payments on some porn sites owned by BornHub’s parent company, MindGeek.
Visa says the sites it will allow will only host professionally produced adult content rather than user-generated content, which it currently blocks.
“After a comprehensive review, Visa will restore admission privileges to Mindgeek sites that offer professionally produced adult content subject to requirements designed to ensure compliance with the law,” Visa said in a statement.
This comes after Visa temporarily halted purchases on the Burnhub website earlier this month, following allegations in the New York Times report of child abuse and non-consensual activity on the site.
The credit card company says its temporary ban on Burnhub and other Mindgeek platforms remains in effect until the ongoing investigation is completed.
The “Times” report described recordings on the porn site “Burn Hub” on the Internet that included assaults on women and unconscious girls and videos of naked underage girls. “Burnhub” denied these allegations, describing them as “irresponsible and blatantly incorrect.”
Since that time, credit card companies including Mastercard and Discover cut financial ties with the site and prevented customers from making purchases on its platform.
In response to the allegations, PornHub has taken some action, removing millions of pornographic videos from unverified downloaders on its platform. The measure cut the number of videos on the company’s website from 13.5 million to less than almost 3 million.
Now, Pornhub says it will only allow content that is uploaded by the authorized users who have been verified.
