Los Angeles Lakers head coach Frank Vogel entered NBA health and safety protocol as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic. The journalist also added that David Fizdale will lead the team tonight in Chicago against the newly recovered Bulls.
Frank Vogel has become the third NBA coach to enter COVID protocols this month, joining Rick Carlisle from Indiana and Alvin Gentry from Sacramento. The Lakers are one of the teams most affected by the virus, up to six of their players are on the list of absences due to COVID: Malik Monk, Kent Bazemore, Dwight Howard, Austin Reaves, Avery Bradley and Talen Horton-Tucker.
The team is currently reduced to nine available players and it will be Fizdale who gives orders from the bench. The one who usually works as an assistant will make his debut as head coach of the Los Angeles franchise, although he already has experience in the position after his stint with the New York Knicks and Memphis Grizzlies.
Fans of the purple and gold team are holding on to LeBron James and Russell Westbrook along with what newly signed Isaiah Thomas can add. The small point guard left a good feeling against the Timberwolves, but could not avoid the defeat of his team.
The Lakers, with a record of 16 wins and 14 losses, seemed to get their season back on track after an uneven start. However, this new wave of setbacks – casualties due to COVID and Anthony Davis injury – puts them in a totally different scenario. They face a week of really demanding four games (Bulls, Suns, Spurs and Nets) with many doubts.
