With the presidential announcement for the extension to other states, which includes Michoacán and Nayarit, for the regularization of illegal cars from the United States and Canada, the Mexican Association of Automotive Dealers (AMDA) estimates that there will be an impact on the sale of new vehicles in the Mexican market, by decreasing 200,000 units annually.
Guillermo Rosales Zárate, president of the AMDA, warned that in a single blow, 2 million imported illegal cars could be regularized, after the announcement of allowing the entry of used units and the fierce defense of the Chief Executive, Andrés Manuel López Obrador for the entry of “contraband” cars. According to figures from the General Administration of Customs, of the Ministry of Finance, the import trend of used cars through legal means has increased 39% in the period January to October 2021, from 97,516 units to 135,546 vehicles.
“The year that closed is estimated with the legal import of 160,000 units. But the greatest risk is that of the regularization of contraband used cars, ”lamented Rosales Zárate.
Since the entry into force of the decree to regularize illegal cars, it was designed for the border area, “but they already made the request, we also decided to extend it to Michoacán … I promise that the program for Nayarit will also be applied” López Obrador said at the December 8 conference.
