US Defense Secretary Ryan McCarthy told a Democrat on Sunday that at least 25 domestic terrorism cases have been opened as a result of Wednesday’s attack by President Donald Trump’s supporters on the Capitol.
The Justice Ministry also said that two other men were arrested in connection with the riots on Wednesday.
Representative Jason Crowe, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, said McCarthy told him the Pentagon was aware of “more potential threats from potential terrorists” in the days leading up to the inauguration of Democratic President-elect Joe Biden on January 20.
“Long rifles, petrol bombs and explosive devices were found … indicating that an even greater disaster was averted with difficulty,” Crowe said in the summary of his call with McCarthy.
McCarthy assured him that the Department of Defense is working with local and federal law enforcement to coordinate security preparations.
