A draft government proposal reviewed by Reuters on Sunday indicated that Germany plans to close most stores from Wednesday to January 10, with the tightening of the general isolation restrictions it imposes to contain the emerging Corona virus epidemic.
The draft was prepared before a meeting later in the day between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders.
The proposal would allow only stores of basic goods and services to remain open, such as supermarkets and pharmacies, in addition to banks.
According to the draft, schools will also be essentially closed during that period, and company owners will be required to stop their business or have their employees work from home.
Germany has imposed partial restrictions for six weeks, closing bars and restaurants, while shops and schools remain open. And some regions have already imposed stricter measures as infection rates have increased.
