Australian Jack Miller will line up second on the grid at the Catalan Grand Prix as he searches for his third MotoGP triumph this year.
Key points:
- Miller was second in qualifying behind Fabio Quartararo
- The Australian has already won the Spanish and French MotoGP races this year
- Quartararo leads the overall MotoGP standings
Miller clocked the second-best time in qualifying in Barcelona despite a crash that he emerged from unscathed, while MotoGP points leader Fabio Quartararo secured pole.
The 26-year-old won two races — the Spanish and French MotoGP events — on the bounce on his Ducati in May to put himself in the conversation for the world title after a poor start to the season.
But he will have to get past Quartararo, who set the fastest lap to become the first rider in seven years to win five consecutive pole positions. Johann Zarco was third.
The 22-year-old Quartararo leads the competition after six races with 105 points, followed by Zarco with 81, while Miller is in fourth on 74 points.
“We know that we still have some margin for improvement, but I am a thrilled to be on pole once again,” France’s Quartararo said.
Quartararo previously took pole at the Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian races.
Six-time former MotoGP champion Marquez continued to struggle after returning from a long injury layoff.
He failed to make the cut for the final qualifying session of the top 10 riders and will start Sunday’s race from 13th on the grid.
