Health officials in the United States said that more than two-thirds of the Corona vaccines that were shipped inside the United States, totaling 15 million doses, were not used, while the rulers of New York and Florida states pledged to punish hospitals that do not rush to give vaccinations.
On Monday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that hospitals should use the vaccines within a week of receiving them, or they will face a fine or reduce their supplies in the future, hours before the announcement of the first infection in New York with a mutated strain of the fastest spreading virus that had first appeared in Britain. .
“I don’t want the vaccine in a fridge or freezer, I want it in anyone’s arm,” Cuomo said. “If you are not doing this job, this raises questions about the efficiency of operating hospitals,” he added.
New York hospitals have used less than half of their vaccine doses to date, but their performance has mixed, Cuomo said.
And in Florida, whose officials give elderly people priority vaccination over many people working in essential jobs, Governor Ron DeSantes announced a policy under which the state allocates more doses to hospitals that use the vaccine at a faster rate.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Florida used less than a quarter of the doses it received, and in total, it was 1.14 million.
The centers added that the federal government distributed more than 15 million doses to US states and regions, but only about 4.5 million doses were used.
In light of this number, the government is far from achieving the goal of vaccinating 20 million people with the vaccine by the end of 2020, but officials say they expect the pace to accelerate strongly this month.
