Women’s world number one Ash Barty has sent a statement to her rivals with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Danka Kovinić in the first round of the Australian Open.
Barty took only 44 minutes to end the world number 77’s tournament on Rod Laver Arena, her victory coming in the wake of her win in the Yarra Vallley Classic final on Sunday.
The 2019 French Open champion did not even concede a break point against her Montenegrin opponent on Tuesday evening.
It was Barty’s first match at a major in over 12 months. The Australian chose to sit out most of the 2020 season because of coronavirus.
More to come.
