Thousands of return travellers will spend Christmas away from their loved ones and locked inside mandatory hotel quarantine, but that hasn’t dampened their holiday cheer.

Australian quarantine Facebook groups were flooded with Merry Christmas wishes and messages of good will.

A few very crafty guests in self-isolation even managed to create their own make-shift Christmas trees in their hotel room.

One woman conjured up a Christmas masterpiece given the limited materials she had on hand.

She made a large tinsel-wrapped tree using paper bags and some equipment found in the hotel’s cupboards.

‘Merry Christmas to one and all,’ she posted.

‘I had so much fun making this Christmas tree and will make Christmas day feel a bit more normal.

‘It’s amazing what 10 days of paper bags and an ironing board can do.’

Another guest in mandatory quarantine used two tables stacked on top of one another to create a stylish Christmas tree.

At the Mantra in Brisbane a message of Christmas cheer was visible from an opposing building.

'Merry Xmas. Hang in there' was written on sheets of paper and stuck to the window so quarantine guests could see

The person who posted a photo of the image wrote: ‘In a country that considers returning citizens and residents infected scum, a big shout out to these guys for their support.’

While others were quite able to drum up a Christmas tree, they made the holiday season as festive as it could be.

One high-flying couple set up a ‘casino’ in their room and posted the photo.

‘So we had a night at the casino tonight in quarantine at the Grand chancellor hotel. Cards and Monopoly money, what more do we need on Christmas Eve?’ the woman said.

At the Sydney harbour Marriott Hotel, a quarantine celebrated Christmas Eve with a luxurious cheese plate and wine overlooking a small Christmas tree perched on the windowsill.

But for a duo of sisters staying at the Meriton Zetland Tower in Sydney, Christmas in isolation was made even more tough after personal items and gifts from their parents had gone missing.

‘My dad just dropped off some stuff for me and my sister (20 and 10 years-old). It has some personal stuff,’ a woman said.

‘It’s really sad because we will spend Christmas without our parents and all their homemade dishes for us are gone.

‘I called the reception many times and they told me that it was not there and lists it down so that they could replace it.

‘How can they replace something that our parents made for us for Christmas? It’s really frustrating and a sad Christmas for us.’
