Australia’s broadband is now ranked a dismal 60th in the world – with speeds slower than Moldova, Bulgaria and Belarus

- Australia’s National Broadband Network relies on the old copper wire system
- Australia is ranked 60th in the world behind Moldova, Bulgaria, Belarus and NZ
- Residents in some areas have left without phone & internet for days, even weeks
Australia has only the 60th fastest online broadband speed in the world, at a time when more people than ever are reliant on it for work.
Latest figures from the Speedtest Global Index ranked Australia’s broadband internet speeds 60th behind countries such as Moldova, Bulgaria, Belarus and New Zealand.
Australian NBN system was intended to increase data transmission rates across the country, boosting online speed and reliability.

The need for fast and robust connectivity had increased during the lockdowns, as more people work and study on their home computer.
However the average broadband speed was at 60.54 megabits per second in November for Australia – the same speed as Ukraine and Vietnam.
Shayne Neumann, the Labor MP for the Queensland federal seat of Blair, likened the internet speed to a ‘handbrake’, making it difficult for Australians to work from home.

Mr Neumann said the decision to rely on a copper wire system instead of signals being fired to premises from local nodes was the wrong one.
‘This government finally admitted its error in September 2020 – after experiencing the NBN’s failures during the pandemic,’ Mr Neumann was quoted to say by The Queensland Times.
‘While they have agreed to revert to Labor’s original NBN plan, it brings the cost of the NBN to $57 billion, some $30 billion more than what the Coalition Government said it would cost back in 2013.’
As a result Mr Neumann has received numerous reports from residents in the Blair region in Queensland about terrible connection and speed.

‘This is a regular occurrence anytime there’s a significant rain event in some areas.’
Topping the Speedtest Global Index was Singapore, with 241 megabits per second; four times faster than Australia.
Strong NBN is especially crucial now due to the coronavirus pandemic as more require a strong connection rate as they work or study from home (pictured)
