April Fool’s Day is official over in Australia for 2021, with media outlets, PR companies and retailers all doing their best to trick people for the sake of a laugh.
Like most fun things last year it was ‘cancelled’ – apparently by Google – which may have actually been an April Fool’s Day trick itself.
But in 2021, April Fool’s Day is back with a vengeance – and nothing is sacred, including Sydney’s greatest icon and a personal beer that gets personal – way too personal.
Here’s a selection of some of Daily Mail Australia’s favourites this year. Did you get fooled by any of them?
So Sydney it hurts
First up is a joke so sharp it is bound to outrage a few people before they realise they’ve been pranked – the Ø House.
The O House – yes that is a mega mansion in Sydney Harbour
The agency which came up with the O House concept also cheekily helped out the inevitable protests it would generate by developing some anti-O House material
It’s the ultimate multimillion dollar designer home literally in Sydney Harbour, just behind the Opera House.
Architectural visualisation production company Third Aesthetic came up with the ‘project’, which they proudly said is ‘reached by a tunnel from the Botanic Gardens.’
The PR company concerned even mocked up a fake social media protest – so look out for that.
A South Australian Police dog handler with members of its new Small Area Urban Search And Guided Evacuation Squad – or SAUSAGES for short
New police dog squad unleashed to snag criminals
South Australian police have unveiled a new squad of sausage dogs.
But why?
‘Covertly trained over the past three months, the three purebred Dachshunds will be primarily used to search small spaces and access areas such as airconditioning vents and ducts, that traditional police German Shepherds weighing around 40kg cannot,’ The Advertiser reported.
The team has a fitting name too: the Small Area Urban Search And Guided Evacuation Squad – or SAUSAGES for short.
SA Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the represented as ‘a big step forward in thinking outside the square to place police on an equal footing with criminals’.
There’s little doubt the crack new squad would hound Adelaide’s criminal element like never before.
Not quite the same, Transport NSW reckons its turned the classic Central Station clock tower digital – and made it waterproof
Sydney’s waterproof clock tower – perfect for rainy days?
Transport NSW used social media to unveil its timely joke: a major change to the iconic face of the Sydney Central Station clock.
‘The Central Station clock tower is going digital!’ it said.
In case traditionalists get outraged, there are some benefits to the change, it explained.
‘The new face designed by renowned German design firm Erster April, will be visible for up to 2km on a clear day and is waterproof up to 50 metres.’
If it wasn’t April 1st this hi-vis suit could be just another fashion show disaster
Paris, Milan … Punchbowl
Judging by some of the train wrecks that make the world’s catwalks, ordinary punters might believe every day is April Fool’s Day in the fashion world.
But men’s fashion label yd brightened everyone’s day with the April 1 announcement of its ‘hi-vis suit’.
‘Go from the worksite to work drinks in an outfit that you’re sure to stand out in,’ yd said in a Facebook post.
Watch out for this one on the catwalks of Paris, Milan, Rome and in the club queues at Punchbowl and Frankston.
Oz Hair & Beauty’s Lamington facemask brings a whole new meaning to having a skin treat-ment
Facial treatments good enough to eat
Oz Hair and beauty went to the pantry to research its new line of skin treatments apparently – with the best being its ‘Lamington exfoliation’ cream.
‘With the skincare market becoming increasingly competitive, companies are constantly striving to develop breakthrough formulas,’ the company gushed in its April 1 statement.
‘From today, Oz Hair & Beauty are disrupting the Australian skincare landscape with their new range of masks, Oz Face, inspired by and created using classic Aussie staples.
They include: Exfoliating Lamington, Brightening Fairy Bread, Foaming Pale Ale and Purifying ‘Face-mite’.
SEEK reckons a cardboard cut-out of you ‘saying’ things like ‘Janet, you’re still on mute’ will keep the family pet calm
Save on pet psychologists
Job seeking platform SEEK announced ‘Owner Cloner’ – solution to ‘help ease pet separation anxiety and save you money on pet psychologist fees’ when your boss asks you to stop working from home because Covid isn’t such a big deal anymore.
Owner Cloner is basically a life-sized cut-out of you and somehow a speaker is attached, running a loop of your most common phrases during the day to fool your pet into thinking you are still at home.
‘For example: ‘Janet, you’re still on mute’, ‘nope, still can’t hear you’, ‘turning my camera off so you don’t have to watch me eat lunch’, ‘let’s circle back on this”, ‘Lee, we can take this offline’, ‘be quiet Brian, I’m on a call’.’
‘Your precious pet will never know you’ve even left home.’
We reckon anyone who spends money on pet therapy would probably go for this.
Say hello to Australia’s newest reptile: the black-bellied red snake (Aprilichis Foolius), which appears so close to the red-bellied black snake it could be the same thing
Just what you wanted to hear – a new snake discovery
Sydney Zoo happened to discover a new snake species today – what a coincidence!
‘Spotted just behind the zoo, in the Western Sydney Parklands, the unusual snake was photographed by a staff member during their lunch break,’ Sydney Zoo posted on Facebook.
‘After analysis by a Reptile Keeper, it was suggested the new species should be called a black-bellied red snake (Aprilichis Foolius) due to its striking resemblance in appearance to the red-bellied black snake.’
Immersive eating experience
Melbourne’s Sea Life aquarium announced an underwater dining experience that does away with the annoying protective glass so you can have a full immersive dining experience.
‘Thousands of people have dined surrounded by sea creatures at the Aquarium over the years and now they’ll have the opportunity to dine while fully submerged in the 2.2 million litre Oceanarium for the ultimate multi-sensory experience,’ the aquarium’s announcement said.
‘Competing with sharks, rays and hundreds of fish for food, Underwater Private Dining gives guests the opportunity to even closer to the magnificent marine creatures residing at the Aquarium.’
Seems a bit fishy.
Rough idea: Ikea’s new Hund Couture range, bark my words this could work
IKEA’s designer dogwear
The Swedish homewares giant has been branching out for years – and overnight it announced a departure into a rough new area: designer dogwear.
‘Hund Couture: A new range of designer couture outfits for dogs, made from the iconic blue FRAKTA bags,’ Ikea barked in its April Fool’s Day announcement.
‘At IKEA, we want to make good design accessible by the many – even our furry friends. HUND COUTURE brings sleek, sophisticated Swedish design to dogs and lets their personality shine’, said Ryan Burman, IKEA spokesperson.
Would you fall for it, or even buy it? One bark for yes, two for no.
Vuly came up with an idea that could really take off – the anti-gravity trampoline
Trampolines made by NASA
Trampoline retailer Vuly worked so hard on it’s anti-gravity trampoline in time for April Fool’s Day that the idea could just about take off.
‘An anti-gravitational trampoline has always been a dream of mine,’ said Vuly Trampolines founder Joe Andon, claiming the company had been kept it a secret for seven years.
Why the big secret?
Vuly claimed it was ‘utilising NASA technology for training astronauts for replicating weightless flight and Zero G gravity’.
It also expected to generate ’70 new tech and manufacturing jobs and generate over $50 million in export sales in the first 12 months.’
It all sounds a bit airy fairy to be honest.
How to get ‘financially comfortable’
Online bank ME Bank announced its ‘Bucksuit, the ultimate in financial comfort’ which is made from ‘Me-rino wool suit featuring anti-laundering properties’.
The Bucksuit is also apparently features plenty of puns.
Designers of this anti-laundering suit had ‘hip pockets have been removed for a svelte cashless look’
ME bank announced the Bucksuit had ‘Hip pockets have been removed for a svelte cashless look’ and ‘a budget-tightening hoody drawstring for tunnel vision when you need to block out unnecessary spending’.
It also apparently ‘takes the sweat out of banking and gives customers extra street cred-it.’
It does have built-in sleeve pockets for credit cards and digital wallets, ‘so you can tap and go with ease’.
A bitter sweet ‘treat’
Subway in New Zealand produced an ad for a cookie that for once would make you hesitate at buying the doughy treats as an add-on with your sub.
The sandwich chain didn’t just want to create a cookie that ruined the fun by being too healthy – they wanted to go much further and make the main flavour one that grosses out a lot of people.
So they made the coriander cookie. Anyone?
Who’s up for a coriander cookie from Subway? Anyone?
Move over Facebook, it’s Snackbook time
Stationery and gift company kikki-k did its homework before designing a special compartment to keep your 3pm snack supply safe.
‘With the Australian Bureau of Statistics reporting that 1 in 5 Australians began snacking more as they were forced to stay and work from home during the COVID-19 lockdown, kikki.K sought to design a product to put your office or WFH ‘seagulls’ at bay, and let your snacks be your snacks’ it announced proudly.
‘Enter, the Snackbook – a sleek desktop snack drawer, stealthily designed as a kikki.K Notebook.’
We reckon thousands of people are doing this already!
If pets could talk… what would they order?
Deliveroo joined the April Fool’s Day fun by announcing a pet treats ‘button’ was being added to its popular online service.
‘Created in collaboration with Deliveroo and a team of experts this state of the art technology has been developed here in Australia to enable all pets to show their unconditional love.’ the announcement said.
‘Owners pre-programme their favourite dish and with the simple ‘paw’ of a button an order can be placed.’
Apparently a claw can use the Deliveroo Treats Button too: ‘Deliveroo Treats is available for all domesticated mammals, reptiles and avian pets.’
‘Whether you love piping hot pizza, fresh sushi or loaded fries, finally your pet can reward you for being a good boy/girl/person.’
There were no suggestions if your goldfish wanted to choose their own dinner at feeding time though.

Sour taste
One idea that came across our desks was actually too weird to describe in full detail.
‘Australian women’s health service, Youly have partnered with a group of fierce microbiologists, to create and perfect a fermentation technique using YOU for the brewing process to launch You Brew.’
Exactly what that means is hard to describe and probably even harder to drink.
The polite version is that the beer is brewed using personal activation agents – way too personal.
‘Youly will capture your very essence, along with the finest key ingredients, to gift you with Australia’s latest and most empowering brew.’
Australia’s first robot teacher
After 2020 didn’t offer much to laugh about, Firbank Junior Grammar School in Melbourne and Madame Tussauds Sydney are getting into the spirit of April 1.
The Sandringham primary school is spruiking its newest staff member on Thursday – an android which specialises in teaching the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) robotics curriculum.
‘The new teacher, Professor Tubby (the robot) has an honorary PHD in robotics because, well, they are a robot,’ it said.
‘Who better to tech the children about robotics than a robot?’
Students will be introduced to their ‘new teacher’ at an assembly on Thursday, with Prof Tubby’s appearance giving kids a hands-on approach to learning about the digital world.
Further down in the media release, the school admits ‘Tubby may be powered by a human called Paul but the STEM focus of the students and dedication to science literacy is clear’.
The Sydney wax museum said we all knew a ‘Karen’ or two, and it was time they were honoured with their own figure
Madame Tussauds’ ‘Karen’
In Sydney, Madame Tussauds’ prank involves immortalising ‘Karens’ the world over in wax form.
‘Karen’, a descriptor for middle-aged and class white woman with an entitled, condescending and often racist attitude, was Macquarie Dictionary’s people’s choice for 2020 word of the year.
The Sydney wax museum said we all knew a ‘Karen’ or two, and it was time they were honoured with their own figure.
‘Karen will be complete with the signature asymmetrical bob and highlights, she’ll have acrylic nails and over-sized sunnies,’ Madame Tussauds Sydney’s Mikayla McGlone said.
‘But what will really bring Karen to life will be that she’s a talking figure and we’re calling on the public to help us select what she’ll say.’
