(CNN) — Legendary musician Carlos Santana suffered a medical emergency on Tuesday during a performance in Michigan.
Santana was “overtaken by heat exhaustion and dehydration,” according to a statement from his management team posted on his official Facebook page. He was performing at the Pine Knob Music Theatre, an outdoor amphitheater in Clarkston.
Temperatures in Clarkston hit 90 degrees Fahrenheit Tuesday, well above average, according to CNN Meteorologist Robert Shackelford.
“I had just started a song that was about joy and love,” Alisa Zee, who attended the concert, told CNN. She “asked for healing for the world. It was during that song that he collapsed.”
In videos recorded by fans, the musician appears sitting in the corner of the stage and stops playing the guitar. As medical personnel tended to Santana, the stage crew raised a black tarp to block the view of the stage. As he was being carried off stage, fans can be heard on a video cheering on the musician. Zee said that he was greeting concertgoers when he was ushered off stage.
“Carlos was taken to the emergency department at McLaren Clarkston for observation and is doing well,” the statement on his Facebook page read.
Carlos Santana posted a short message to his fans on Facebook: “Thank you for your precious prayers…. I forgot to eat and drink water, so I got dehydrated and passed out.”
The musician was scheduled to perform with Earth, Wind, and Fire on Wednesday night in Pennsylvania, but that concert has now been postponed, according to the statement.
Santana performed Monday as part of CNN’s “The Fourth in America” concert.
