A Chinese disease control official said today, Friday, that there is no evidence that new coronavirus strains will affect the effectiveness of a vaccine that China approved yesterday for public use.
China granted a license to a vaccine produced by a unit of the state-backed company Sinopharm, a day after news of the first case of a strain circulating in Britain, for a person coming from abroad.
“There is no reason to panic,” Xu Wenbo, an official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told state television.
“The mutated strain, compared to the previous mutated strains … does not carry any clear change so far in its ability to cause disease.”
He said that no effect of strains on the efficacy of vaccination was observed.
The strain, which British scientists dubbed “VUI-202012/01”, includes a genetic mutation in the protein, which could theoretically lead to an easier spread of Covid-19.
