The supermarket giant will aim to make shopping healthier and more sustainable.

Coles aim to reduce its carbon footprint by committing to 100 per cent renewable energy and reducing the use of plastic packaging.

The store has introduced new packageless refill stations that dispense cleaning agents and laundry detergents from Aussie brands Omo and Surf.

A fruit and vegetable bar will also be available to customers who can receive their veg sliced or juiced, made with the ripest ingredients to reduce waste.

Coles has also improved its stance on plastic by introducing plastic bags made with 80% recycled content, 20% of which is recycled marine industry waste.

Trolley baskets have also undergone a makeover and are now Australian made from 90% recycled milk bottles and 10% recycled plastic.

The roof of the Moonee Ponds store is also contributing to the theme of sustainability, capturing rain water to reduce external water use.

Customers also have the opportunity to recycle their coffee cups at a recycling station, and enjoy a hot beverage guilt free with Rainforest Alliance certified beans.

Coles has also partnered with iconic Melbourne eateries Roll’d, Tremila Pizza and The Fishery to provide customers with more fresh produce.

Sam Cheetham from restaurant ‘Cumulus Inc’ will collaborate with Coles to provide customers with local catches as well as cured fish from a local smokehouse.

Tremila Pizza will be providing customers with stoned baked pizzas that can be cooked in just 90 seconds in the woodfire oven.

The Moonee Ponds concept store has been launched to set an industry standard for sustainable supermarkets and reduce the giant’s impact on the environment.

Coles Group CEO Steven Cain said the launch of ‘Together to Zero’ as well as new targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions were important steps for Coles.

‘As part of these targets that we are setting today, we are delighted to introduce Together to Zero which underlines our commitment to work together with all stakeholders towards net zero greenhouse gas emissions,’ Mr Cain said.

‘A key part of our ambition to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket will be reducing our environmental impact, and we have a responsibility to help create a better Australia for future generations.’
