On Sunday, the Canadian government decided to impose a ban on flights coming to Canada from the United Kingdom to prevent the spread of a new strain of Covid-19, according to the Canadian news network, “CTV News”.
The network quoted prominent government sources as saying that the travel ban will take effect from midnight on Monday.
The move comes after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with members of his government earlier Sunday to discuss the new strain, which is likely to be more contagious than the emerging corona virus that is currently spreading in the United Kingdom.
Federal opposition leaders called on Trudeau to impose a travel ban on the United Kingdom in response to the discovery of the dangerous new strain.
Several European countries have already closed their borders to British travelers, including France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
In another context, Colombian President Ivan Duque said on Sunday that his country will suspend all flights to and from Britain due to concerns related to the emergence of a new strain of Corona virus in the European country, to include this in a growing list of countries that prohibit travel there.
“Starting tomorrow, flights from Colombia to the United Kingdom and from the United Kingdom to Colombia will be banned,” Duque said.
The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus in Colombia has exceeded 1.5 million, according to data announced on Sunday.
