Britain on Saturday reported an increase in cases of the variant Omicron the coronavirus, and the Mayor of London declared a “major incident” to help the capital’s hospitals after a sharp spike in admissions for Covid-19.

“This is a statement of the seriousness of things,” said the official, who had also declared a major incident in January, when growing cases of Covid-19 they threatened to overwhelm the capacity of the hospitals.
