The earthquake of this September 19, 2022, impacted some 48 million Mexicans in various locations in the country. The event of magnitude 7.7 on the Richter scale had its epicenter south of Coalcomán, Michoacán, which left at least one deceased, injured, as well as various damages to homes and buildings.
The telluric movement was felt in at least 12 entities in the country: Aguascalientes, Mexico City, Colima, Guerrero, Hidalgo, Jalisco, Michoacán, Oaxaca, Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz.
However, the states with the most damage were Colima, Michoacán and Jalisco. In the first entity, the death of a person was recorded due to the collapse of a roof in a department store.
The governor of Colima, Indira Vizcaíno Silva, did not rule out the possibility that someone trapped in the rubble could be found in this shopping center. She also confirmed that in the municipality of Tecomán there was an explosion of a gas tank that resulted in three injured people; a woman, whose health condition is reported to be serious, and two minors.
Similarly, on the Minatitlán-Colima highway, there were failures in the electrical service system, and structural damage to homes in the municipality of Manzanillo. In the same entity, the National Water Commission (Conagua) confirmed the appearance of cracks in the Trojes storage dam.
In Michoacán, an injury was reported due to falling glass in a rural Social Security hospital.
The state government confirmed damage to two regional hospitals: Aquila and Maruata, as well as the ISSSTE in Apatzingán, as well as damage to some churches and homes on the coast.
In Jalisco, Sergio Ramírez López, coordinator of Civil Protection and Firefighters of Guadalajara and Zapopan reported that after the earthquake, which lasted two minutes and 44 seconds, only minor material damage was reported.
For his part, the Secretary of Civil Protection of Guerrero, Roberto Arroyo Matus, indicated that the preliminary balance was that of the fall of ceiling tiles in two buildings of the government palace and the care of 21 people who suffered nervous breakdowns, with no major damage in the rest of the state.
While in Querétaro, the municipal coordinator of Civil Protection of the homonymous municipality, Francisco Ramírez, reported that a total of 34,827 people were evacuated from 34 buildings in the state capital.
According to the National Seismological Service, until the closing of this edition, a total of 478 aftershocks were reported; the largest magnitude has been 5.3 Richter degrees.
suspension of classes
The head of the Executive of Colima, Indira Vizcaíno, confirmed the suspension of classes today until an analysis of the educational infrastructure in the entity is made.
Other states joined the measure, however, they only canceled classes in the afternoon shift yesterday.
Jalisco did it from basic to university level. Aguascalientes did the same together with Guerrero, who also suspended work after the earthquake so that Civil Protection personnel could review the buildings to rule out possible damage to their structures. Buildings with some damage
- After the earthquake on Monday, various authorities reported a series of damages.
- In Mexico City, a total of 21 properties reported as damaged by the earthquake were registered.
- The Virreinal building, Plaza de la Constitución No. 2 in the Centro neighborhood was classified as having a medium risk level.
- In Argentina No. 8, in the Centro neighborhood of the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office, it also presented a medium risk.
- In Dr. Navarro No. 182, Doctores, Cuauhtémoc a fence collapsed and some walls cracked.
- A crack in the girder and cracks appeared in a building located at Philippines No. 178, Portales, Benito Juárez.
- The National Lottery building had cracks between dividing walls. The same was presented in a PRI building, in Azcapotzalco
- In Colima, reports of minor damage to the walls of the Regional Museum of History and the breakage of a dozen small-format pieces that were exhibited in its rooms.
- In turn, Jalisco refers to a minor detachment of quarry in the temples of La Merced and San Agustín, in Guadalajara.
