Emergency declared at a busy school amid fears a dangerous armed man is on the loose – as kids are put on lockdown
A busy school has been locked down amid a frantic search for a man who may be armed with a gun.
Queensland Police made an emergency declaration on Tuesday morning during the hunt for a man wanted on domestic violence matters.
Officers were called to a home in Upper Coomera on the Gold Coast on Monday night following reports of a disturbance, before the man fled the scene.
No one was injured, but an exclusion zone was established by police on Tuesday which includes Ormeau State School in Pimpama.
The school is in lockdown and heavily-armed officers have been seen swarming the gates.
Parents received a text message on Tuesday morning that read, ‘the school is currently in lockdown,’ according to news.com.au.
‘Children and teachers will continue learning inside classrooms but will not be leaving their rooms. Police have cordoned off the area as a precaution and police will not allow you access to the school.’
At 11.30am, the school wrote in a Facebook post: ‘Children are safe, have had their lunch and are working in their rooms.’
‘We are focusing on your child’s safety.’
A Goodstart Early Learning pre-school near the high school is also located within the lockdown area.
Boundaries are in place north from Mirambeena Drive into Wharf Rd intersection with Pimpama Jacobs Well Rd, east from Pimpama Jacobs Well Road to Hotham Creek, south from creek line of Hotham Creek to Creek Street and west from Creek Street to Mirambeena Drive.
Helicopter footage showed emergency vehicles and heavily armed policemen in fatigues from gathering at Calgray Realty, on the corner of Mirambeena Drive and Guara Grove in Ormeau.
