A former officer at HMP Five Wells, also known as the £253m eco-prison dubbed HMP ‘Woke’, has spoken out about the unsafe and dangerous conditions in the G4S-run jail. According to the former officer, prisoners in the facility have access to weapons everywhere, and violence is a common occurrence. This comes despite the prison being designed as a ‘different’ type of jail with no bars on the windows, with the intention of providing inmates a platform for changing their lives. The prison was built on the site of the former HMP Wellingborough, which closed in 2012.
Officers who left the prison due to safety concerns claim that no action is taken against inmates possessing weapons. One former officer even described a fight where an officer was seriously injured, and the prisoner responsible was only placed in segregation briefly before escaping and climbing onto the roof. G4S, in response, stated that the safety of staff and prisoners is their top priority, and they do not tolerate violence. They further added that they take swift and robust action in response to serious incidents, and that such incidents are referred to the police for further prosecution.
Recently, videos have surfaced on social media showing inmates partying with alcohol and drugs, as well as engaging in activities on prison rooftops. Guards at the prison have revealed that they frequently come across homemade or smuggled weapons, with one officer claiming to have been stabbed. The guards expressed concerns that the prisoners are in control of the prison and that without changes, a serious incident such as a stabbing or murder is inevitable. They also mentioned issues with inadequate staffing, with female officers often being alone with a large number of male inmates, and raised concerns about the potential for corrupt staff members to bring in contraband drugs for prisoners.
