Agricultural and fishery exports from Mexico totaled 13,254 million dollars in the period from January to July 2022, with which they had a year-on-year increase of 9.8% and accumulated nine years of growth in the same periods.
Graphically, the ascending line of this indicator started from the base of 7,123 million dollars in exports during January-July 2013, according to data from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico).
Mexico’s agricultural sector is large and diversified, in addition to being highly integrated with the United States, which makes it a sector with good prospects for companies from both countries.
Simultaneously, Mexico has registered a surplus in its agricultural and fishing trade with the world in the last 10 years, considering the same periods, with a peak in 2020 (+4,108 million dollars), but with a marked decline since then, to only 986 million this year.
Driven in part by the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA, in force from January 1994 to June 2020) and its replacement to date, the Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), the Agricultural and fishing trade between Mexico and the United States grew from 4,714 million dollars in 1993 to 39,195 million in 2021.
One of the reasons for the increase in these trade flows is the complementarity in the primary sectors of Mexico and the United States, since Mexico has its strength in the production of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the year, with a broad labor base, while The United States is a world leader in the production of grains, oilseeds, cereals, and livestock, with large and fertile tracts of land and a temperate climate, as well as ample access to water, mechanization, and financing.
With more specific data, from January to June 2022, the merchandise with the highest sales of agricultural and fishery goods from Mexico abroad were: avocado (1,761 million dollars), tomato (1,351 million), pepper (823 million), fresh strawberries (608 million), citrus (504 million), cucumber (400 million) and melon, watermelon and papaya (386 million).
They were followed by: unroasted coffee ($374 million), cabbage ($363 million), live cattle ($315 million), guava, mango and mangosteen ($280 million), almonds, walnuts, pistachios ($278 million), grapes and raisins (254 million) and onions (249 million).
US main supplier of Mexico
The United States has been able to maintain its position as number one in agricultural imports from Mexico, with a coverage of almost 70% of the market share.
Overall, according to the Commerce Department, US market share in Mexico has remained high, as geographic advantages continue to make the US the best supplier of most major agricultural products.
Among the main Mexican imports of this type of US goods in the first seven months of the current year, the following stand out: corn (mainly yellow), 2,792 million dollars (+10.8%, year-on-year); soybeans, 2,147 million (+21.8%); wheat, 1,100 million (+40.3%), turnip or rapeseed, 494 million (+10.7%) and cotton, 286 million (+37.9 percent).
